Glossop is now part of the Borough of High Peak, but until 1974 existed as a Borough comprising Glossop, Hadfield and Padfield. The Romans built their fort at Melandra near Gamesley, and the villages of Whitfield, Simmondley, Charlesworth, Chisworth, Dinting, Tintwistle and Gamesley as well as Glossop, Hadfield and Padfield are recorded in the Domesday Book.
The original town of Glossop was centred on what we now know as Old Glossop. The nineteenth century saw massive expansion to the new town of Glossop in connection with the cotton industry.
The 20th century saw a complete change away from large employers to a prime residential town with a frequent train service to Manchester, pleasant public parks and facilities - and a busy high street. Aspinall Wright is a prominent and familiar landmark on that High Street and plays a prominent role as THE Glossop Solicitors!
